The engineered stone crisis
The fastest-growing source of silicosis today is engineered stone — the quartz countertops in millions of kitchens. Because the material is more than 90% crystalline silica, cutting it releases intensely toxic dust. In California alone, more than 560 fabrication workers have been diagnosed since 2019 and at least 31 have died, most of them young Latino immigrants.
