Engineered Stone Silicosis: The Quartz Countertop Crisis
Why engineered stone (quartz) countertops cause a fast-growing silicosis epidemic among fabrication workers, how severe the outbreak is, the push to ban the material, and workers' legal options.
Engineered stone — also sold as quartz or artificial stone — is the leading cause of a fast-growing silicosis epidemic among countertop workers. Because the material is more than 90% crystalline silica, cutting and polishing it releases intensely toxic dust. The result is severe, sometimes fatal lung disease appearing in workers far younger than traditional silicosis patients, sometimes after just a few years on the job.
Why is engineered stone so dangerous?
Engineered stone is made from crushed quartz bound with resins and pigments, poured into molds to mass-produce countertop slabs. The finished product is safe for the homeowners who use it — the danger is to the workers who fabricate it. When a slab is cut, ground, or polished, it releases a fine dust of respirable crystalline silica that lodges deep in the lungs and causes permanent scarring. On top of the sheer quantity, experts note the dust from engineered stone is especially toxic because of added chemicals and nano-sized particles small enough to bypass many respirator masks.
How bad is the outbreak?
California is currently the only state systematically tracking silicosis among countertop workers, and its numbers are stark:
These are CDPH’s counts as of 13 August 2026, as reported from its surveillance dashboard; the peer-reviewed figure published in NEJM Evidence in September 2026 is 592 cases through June 2026 with 65 transplants and 31 deaths. The California overview tracks the numbers as they change. They are widely considered an undercount. A Cal/OSHA industrial hygienist told the Standards Board in May 2026 that cases were doubling every 13 months. Cases have also been reported in Colorado, Texas and Washington (CDC, 2019), and Massachusetts confirmed its first case in December 2025. The people affected are overwhelmingly young Latino men — many of them immigrants who say they were never warned about the danger — and some are diagnosed while still in their 20s.
Why does it cause silicosis so much faster?
Traditional silicosis took decades to develop. Engineered stone produces accelerated and acute forms of the disease in just a few years, because the exposure is so concentrated. Workers grinding and polishing high-silica slabs — often in shops without adequate wet-cutting equipment or ventilation — inhale enormous quantities of fine dust. That intensity is why fabricators are turning up with advanced, irreversible lung damage at ages when the disease was once almost unheard of. Is engineered stone being banned?
It’s moving in that direction, though no U.S. ban is final yet. On 21 May 2026, California’s Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board unanimously granted in part a petition from occupational physicians (Petition 609) to prohibit the fabrication and installation of engineered stone containing more than 1% crystalline silica, directing Cal/OSHA to prepare an emergency finding for expedited rulemaking and to convene advisory committees. If adopted, California would become the first U.S. state to ban the material, following Australia, whose ban took effect on 1 July 2024. SB 20, the STOP Act, took effect on 1 January 2026 and already bans dry fabrication and requires annual training attestations, on top of the Cal/OSHA silica standard made permanent in December 2024; health experts argue that enforcement alone has not stopped the case count rising. The industry is fighting back. Major manufacturers, including the largest U.S. maker, argue the problem is unsafe fabrication shops rather than the product itself, and have promoted certification and training programs as an alternative to a ban. Public-health physicians counter that the material is simply too toxic to fabricate safely, pointing out that lower-silica alternatives already exist.
Can workers sue over engineered stone silicosis?
Yes — engineered stone is at the center of current silicosis litigation. Five cases have reached a jury: $52.4 million in Los Angeles in August 2024 (the first of its kind), a defense verdict for Caesarstone in May 2025, $17.45 million in Colorado in April 2026, $47 million in Los Angeles in August 2026 and $7.1 million in Orange County the same month. What should affected workers do?
If you fabricated or installed engineered stone and have symptoms — or have already been diagnosed — two steps matter. First, get a medical evaluation; tell the doctor about your work history, since silicosis is often mistaken for other conditions.
