What Causes Silicosis? Silica Dust Exposure Explained


Silicosis is caused by inhaling respirable crystalline silica — a fine dust released when materials like stone, concrete, sand, and engineered quartz are cut, ground, drilled, or polished. The particles are small enough to reach deep into the lungs, where they trigger inflammation and permanent scarring. It is entirely caused by this exposure, which means it is also entirely preventable.

What is crystalline silica?

Crystalline silica is a common natural mineral found in sand, stone, concrete, brick, and many manufactured products. Quartz is its most common form. In solid form it’s harmless — the danger appears only when the material is disturbed and broken into tiny airborne particles. The fraction small enough to be inhaled deep into the lungs is called respirable crystalline silica, and that is what causes silicosis. The more silica a material contains, the more hazardous the dust it produces, which is why engineered stone (over 90% silica) is far more dangerous to work with than most natural stone.

How does silica dust cause silicosis?

When respirable silica particles are inhaled, they lodge deep in the lung tissue. The body’s immune cells try to remove them but cannot break them down, so the particles keep triggering inflammation. Over time this forms scar tissue (fibrosis) and small nodules that stiffen the lungs and reduce their ability to move oxygen into the blood. This scarring is permanent and progressive — it cannot be reversed, and it can continue to worsen even after exposure stops. That is why prevention, not treatment, is the only reliable protection.

Which jobs cause silica exposure?

Silica exposure happens in any work that cuts, grinds, drills, or blasts silica-containing materials. The highest-risk trades include:

Engineered-stone fabrication has become the most dangerous of these in recent years because of the material’s extreme silica content and the dust it produces.

What makes exposure worse?

Several conditions sharply increase how much silica a worker breathes in: dry cutting instead of using water to suppress dust; poor ventilation in enclosed shops; lack of proper respirators; and no dust-collection equipment on tools. Smoking compounds the lung damage. The intensity and duration of exposure shape which form of the disease develops — heavier exposure can cause accelerated or acute silicosis in just a few years, while lower-level exposure over many years tends to cause the chronic form.

How is silica exposure prevented?

Silicosis is preventable when exposure is controlled. The recognized protections are engineering controls first — wet-cutting methods that keep dust down, local exhaust ventilation, and dust-collection systems on tools — backed by appropriate respiratory protection when dust can’t be fully eliminated. OSHA sets a permissible exposure limit for respirable crystalline silica and requires employers to keep workers below it. When employers fail to provide these controls, workers can be exposed to dangerous dust levels without even realizing it — which is the situation at the heart of much current silicosis litigation.

What to do if you’ve been exposed

If you’ve worked around silica dust, it’s worth knowing the warning signs and getting a medical evaluation if any appear, since early-stage silicosis often has no symptoms.
