Engineered Stone Silicosis: The Quartz Countertop Crisis


Engineered stone — also sold as quartz or artificial stone — is the leading cause of a fast-growing silicosis epidemic among countertop workers. Because the material is more than 90% crystalline silica, cutting and polishing it releases intensely toxic dust. The result is severe, sometimes fatal lung disease appearing in workers far younger than traditional silicosis patients, sometimes after just a few years on the job.

Why is engineered stone so dangerous?

Engineered stone is made from crushed quartz bound with resins and pigments, poured into molds to mass-produce countertop slabs. The finished product is safe for the homeowners who use it — the danger is to the workers who fabricate it. When a slab is cut, ground, or polished, it releases a fine dust of respirable crystalline silica that lodges deep in the lungs and causes permanent scarring. How bad is the outbreak?

California is currently the only state systematically tracking silicosis among countertop workers, and its numbers are stark:

These figures are widely considered an undercount, and cases have also been reported in Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Utah, and other states. Why does it cause silicosis so much faster?

Traditional silicosis took decades to develop. Engineered stone produces accelerated and acute forms of the disease in just a few years, because the exposure is so concentrated. Workers grinding and polishing high-silica slabs — often in shops without adequate wet-cutting equipment or ventilation — inhale enormous quantities of fine dust. Is engineered stone being banned?

It’s moving in that direction, though no U.S. ban is final yet. In May 2026, California’s Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board voted to advance a proposal toward prohibiting the fabrication and installation of engineered stone containing more than 1% crystalline silica, directing Cal/OSHA to draft an emergency temporary standard while it develops permanent rules. If enacted, California would become the first U.S. state to ban the material — following Australia, which banned it in 2024 after its own outbreak. A new California law that took effect in January 2026 already tightened safety rules and penalties for fabrication shops, but health experts argue enforcement alone isn’t stopping the deaths.

The industry is fighting back. Major manufacturers, including the largest U.S. maker, argue the problem is unsafe fabrication shops rather than the product itself, and have promoted certification and training programs as an alternative to a ban. Public-health physicians counter that the material is simply too toxic to fabricate safely, pointing out that lower-silica alternatives already exist.

Can workers sue over engineered stone silicosis?

Yes — engineered stone is at the center of current silicosis litigation. Juries have returned major verdicts against manufacturers, including a $52.4 million California verdict in 2024 (the first of its kind) and a $17.45 million Colorado verdict in 2026. A development worth knowing: In January 2026, engineered-stone manufacturers backed a proposed federal bill (H.R. 5437) that would shield them from liability and dismiss pending lawsuits.
